3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He Has also set
eternity in the hearts of men;yet they cannot fathom what God has
done from beginning to end.
God has "set eternity in the hearts of men." This means that we can never be completely satisfied with earthly pleasures and pursuits. Because we are created in God's image, (1) we have a spiritual thirst, (2) we have eternal value, and (3) nothing but the eternal God can satisfy us. He has built in us a restless yearning for the kind of perfect world that can only be found in his perfect rule. He has given us a glimpse of the perfection of his creation. But it is only a glimpse; we cannot see into the future or comprehend everything. So we must trust him now and do his work on earth.
Psalm 16:11 You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with your joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
Mark 10:17-22 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher, "he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal Life?" "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good-except God alone. You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.' "Teacher," he declared, "all these I have kept since I was a boy," Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasures in heaven. Then come, follow me." At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth.
This young man wanted to be sure he would get eternal life, so he asked what he could do. He said he'd never once broken any of the Laws Jesus mentioned, and perhaps he had even kept the Pharisees' loophole-filled version of them. But Jesus lovingly broke through the young man's pride with a challenge that brought out his true motives: "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor." This challenge exposed the barrier that could keep this young man out of the kingdom: his love of money. Money represented his pride of accomplishment and self-effort. Ironically, his attitude made him unable to keep the first commandment, let nothing be more important than God (Exodus 20:3) He could not meet the one requirement Jesus gave- to turn his whole heart and life over to God. The man came to Jesus wondering what he could do; he left seeing what he was unable to do. What barriers are keeping you from eternal life with God?
John 3:16 "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
Some people are repulsed by the idea of eternal life because their lives are miserable. But eternal life is not an extension of a person's miserable, mortal life; eternal life is God's life embodied in Christ given to all believers now as a guarantee that they will live forever. In eternal life there is no death, sickness, heartache, problems, enemy, evil or sin. When we don't know Christ, we make choices as though this life is all we have. In reality, this life is just the introduction to eternity. Receive this new life by faith and begin to evaluate all that happens from an eternal perspective.
John 5:39,40 You diligently study the Scriptures because you think that by them you possess eternal life. These are the Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have eternal life.
The religious leaders know what the Bible said but failed to apply its words to their lives. They knew the teachings of the Scriptures but failed to see the Messiah to whom the Scriptures pointed. They knew the rules but missed the Saviour. Entrenched in their own religious system, they refused to let the Son of God change their lives. Don't become so involved in "religion" that you miss Christ.
John 6:40 For my Father's will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.
Those who put their faith in Christ will be resurrected from physical death to eternal life with God when Christ comes again.
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal Life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Eternal life is a free gift from God. If it is a gift, then it is not something that we earn, nor something that must be paid back. Consider the foolishness of someone who receives a gift out of love and then offers to pay for it. A gift cannot be purchased by the recipient. A more appropriate response to a loved one who offers a gift is graceful acceptance with gratitude. Our salvation is a gift of God, not something of our own doing. He saved us because of his mercy, not because of any righteous things that we have done. How much more we should accept with thanksgiving the gift that God has freely given to us.
It's in The Word!
Two friends were discussing the possibility of life after death. "Hell is a myth," one argues "How can a God of love condemn His creatures to everlasting punishment?" His friend nodded in agreement, and the matter seemed to be settled. The two sat silently for a moment until one of them looked up and said, thoughtfully, "Suppose it is true, after all?"
Suppose it is true after all that Hell exists? Jesus Christ Himself described it as a place of "Darkness" and a "furnace of fire" where there shall be "wailing and gnashing of teeth." Matthew 13:42 They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Some say there is no consciousness after death. But from Christ's words, it's evident that a person in Hell is just as aware of himself and his surroundings as when he was on earth!
The Bible, God's Word, says hell is an everlasting burning for the punishment of sinners and hypocrites, a bottomless pit where men have no rest, day or night. Isaiah 33:14 The sinners of Zion are terrified; trembling grips the godless; "Who of us can dwell with the consuming fire? Who of us can dwell with everlasting burning?"
Revelation 20:1-3 And I saw an angel coming down out of heaven, having the key to the Abyss (bottomless pit) and holding in his hand a great chain. He seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil, or Satan, and bound him for a thousand years. He threw him into the Abyss, and locked and sealed it over him, to keep him from deceiving the nations anymore until the years were ended. After that, he must be set free for a short time.
Revelation 14:11 And the smoke of their torment rises for ever and ever. There is no rest day or night for those who worship the beast and his image, or for anyone who receives the mark of his name."
It's a place where people pray, but their prayers are not heard, where they gnaw their tongues and at the same time curse God. Hell is a place where no one would want their loved ones to go. Luke 16:27 "He answered, 'Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my father's house, for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.'
Revelation 16:10,11 The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the throne of the beast, and his kingdom was plunged into darkness. Men gnawed their tongues in agony and cursed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, but they refused to repent of what they had done.
Suppose it is true after all that God will punish sin? Hebrews 9:27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgement, so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.
Suppose it is true after all that we cannot get to Heaven on the basis of good things we've done? Isaiah 64:6 All of us have become like one who is unclean and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
Suppose it is true after all that Jesus Christ is the only Saviour? John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
Be assured that God is holy and must punish sin. But He is also a God of love. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
Therefore, He sent His Son to die on the cross for our sins: Romans 5:8,9 But God demonstrates his won love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Much more then, being now justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. John 3:36 Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life, but whoever rejects the Son will not see life, for God's wrath remains on him.
But we must first recognize that we have sinned, ask God's forgiveness and receive Christ as our Saviour. Then we have the joy and peace of God's forgiveness, and the assurance that when we die we will be with Christ forever in Heaven.
Have you received Jesus Christ as your Savior? It's a matter of eternal life or death. The choice is yours.
